Analysis of film openings

Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems analysis

The narrative in the opening of uncut gems is told by showing miners, mine for gems in what seems to be a cave. We are then zoomed into the a beautiful gem found by one of the miners. Then taken through the gem seeing all of its beautiful colours shining representing the quality and wonder within it. The inside of this gem then slowly blends in and changes into the human colon. The character getting this colonoscopy is Howard Ratner, the protagonist in this movie. The continuous zoom makes the audience feel as if we are on a journey through this gem which forebodes the future and the journey of Howard, the main character and the struggles he goes through throughout the movie. The editing used in the opening would have been a key way to make the opening as iconic as it was. The slow change from the inside of the Gem into Howards colon shows that not only is this gem associated to him, it shows that gems are in his blood and could show slight signs of addiction to buying and selling gems and jewelry. The change of lighting throughout this opening is another key reason why the opening was so emotional and successful at giving the audience an idea on the movie, and making the movie as eye catching as possible. At the start of the opening, we see a dark gloomy setting as the miners mine for gems inside the deep dark caves. As soon as we see the gem and as soon as we get zoomed into the gem the lighting changed and gets extremely bright, with bright, majestic colours. Then the lighting dims down more as we start to see the inside of Howards colon showing that although the gem is beautiful, owning it and having the power and the money it is worth, doesn't make you more beautiful or a better person on the inside.
