Characteristics of a Comedy

Camera Angles

A large range of camera angles are used in comedy movies to make these funnier and more humorous. Low and High shots are used in comedy movies to show a characters place and power they have in a comedy movie, for example if the camera angle is looking down on a character, it shows that he isn't a very powerful person but if the camera is pointing and looking up to a character, the character would likely be a powerful person.

The creation of realism is important in comedies as the audience can put themselves in the actors position and by doing this, could create more humour. By doing this, the shots would be very naturalistic and not heavily edited or changed.

Lighting

In comedy movies, bright lighting and high hues and high saturation are used. This makes the Comedy movie seem happy and uplifting, whereas in a horror movie, there would likely be low saturations, low brightness and this generally creates a low mood.

Lighting has a huge affect on the audience and therefore is a key thing to look at when creating a movie yourself.

Mise en Scene

The Mise en Scene in comedy movies is over exaggerated to create an over the top humorous affect. The props used in these movies are usually associated with humour and would be used with funny intentions. The makeup the characters will be dressed in would show the character's personality alot and would usually be over the top and very humorous to create a character that is memorable and funny.

Themes

Comedies go over a huge variety of themes. usually comedies have sub genres for example, action comedies, romance comedies or even sci fi comedies. There are lots of different sub genres within the comedy genre to create different feels and different affects.
